Color Us Curious: 5 Design Stays Across Africa

Five design-forward stays for curious souls, color lovers & people who like their holidays with a little extra personality.

Forget everything you think you know about African interiors. Well, maybe not everything, but we're definitely leaving the safari-beige color palette at home for this trip.

From a wonderfully eccentric island hideaway in Senegal to a technicolor tropical dream in Mauritius, we've rounded up five places that make our design-loving hearts beat a little faster. Think bold colors, beautiful craftsmanship, unexpected details and the kind of interiors that have you mentally redecorating your entire apartment before you've even unpacked your suitcase.

Because at SISTERHOOD, we believe the best souvenirs are new perspectives (and maybe a few extra kilos of ceramics in your luggage).

Here's a little love letter to some of Africa's colorful corners. We hope you're inspired to look beyond the obvious and plan your next design-led adventure somewhere on this continent. Happy exploring!

  1. Asao Gorée, Senegal

Come for the polka dots, stay for the slow island mornings.

Just a short boat ride from Dakar, the tiny island of Gorée is home to colorful colonial-era architecture, winding streets and a creative spirit that's hard not to fall for. Enter Asao Gorée: an intimate hideaway where art, design and island life come together rather beautifully.

Expect character, thoughtful details and the kind of effortless atmosphere that makes you forget what day it is. Our favorite kind of travel amnesia.

  1. La Chambre Bleue, Tunisia

Fifty shades of blue? Yes, please.

Tucked away in the historic medina of Tunis, La Chambre Bleue is a little love affair with traditional Tunisian design. Think intricate patterns, beautiful tiles, carved details and enough blue to make even the Mediterranean jealous.

It's intimate, atmospheric and wonderfully old-school in all the right ways. Proof that sometimes the most inspiring design isn't about reinventing the wheel, but celebrating the craftsmanship that's been there for centuries.

  1. Tamodi Estate, South Africa

Nature called. She has excellent taste.

Set against the dramatic landscapes of South Africa's Garden Route, Tamodi Estate is where breathtaking scenery meets seriously good design. Thoughtfully designed by the one and only Sophie Ashby — whose work we're mildly (read: wildly) obsessed with here at SISTERHOOD — this dreamy hideaway is all about beautiful textures, warm tones and effortless elegance.

And as if we needed another reason to love her, Sophie has just opened a Cape Town outpost of her design studio. Our favorite designer setting up shop in one of our favorite corners of the world? What a dream come true!

  1. Cardamom House, Kenya

La vie en rose, but make it Kenyan coastal.

Tucked away on Kenya's dreamy coastline, Cardamom House is a little slice of dusty-rose heaven. The entire villa is dipped in the prettiest shades of blush pink, which become even more magical at sunset, when the golden evening light wraps the whole place in a romantic, rose-tinted glow.

Owned by an international couple who know a thing or two about hospitality (they run lodges in Kenya and beyond), Cardamom House was actually designed as their private home before they decided to share it with a lucky few. With fewer than five rooms, it feels more like staying at your impossibly stylish friend's beach house than checking into a hotel.

We spent a few days here in 2025 and fell so hopelessly in love that we ended up doubling our stay. Because sometimes the best travel plans are the ones you cancel.

  1. Salt of Palmar, Mauritius

Warning: May cause serious color cravings.

If SISTERHOOD were to run away to a tropical island, there's a good chance you'd find us here. Designed by Camille Walala, SALT of Palmar is a glorious celebration of bold colors, playful patterns and unapologetically joyful interiors.

Think electric blues, sunshine yellows, graphic stripes and enough personality to make your average all-white beach resort feel a little shy. Add the turquoise waters of Mauritius and you've got yourself a very convincing reason to book that flight.

Dopamine dressing, but for hotels.

A LITTLE MORE COLOR, A LOT MORE CURIOSITY.

Africa is a continent of endless creative perspectives, rich design traditions and extraordinary places to discover. And while we love a good safari as much as the next person, there's so much more to explore beyond the expected.

Consider this your friendly reminder to take the less obvious route, book the interesting little hotel, talk to the local makers and always, always leave some space in your suitcase.

You never know what you'll fall in love with.

With love & wanderlust,

SISTERHOOD STUDIO 💌
